AOSIS Proposal ‘Wins Support’ At UN Climate Talks

A story posted today on RTCC quoted delegates from the EU, USA, Norway, Japan and Mali on behalf of the Africa Group welcoming AOSIS’s proposal to advance work under Workstream 2 of the ADP:

“‘We have heard the proposal from AOSIS and we support it. It is clear we need the technical input to get deeper into the options identified in the technical paper, and through discussion here, and really put out the options for further action,’EU delegate Nicole Wilke said in Tuesday’s plenary session.”

“Speaking to RTCC last night, another EU negotiator said the paper had brought a dose of realism into talks, and opened up possibilities of sharing mitigation efforts with other bodies more suited to the task.”

“‘They are focusing on things in the real world, it’s good that they are focusing on things that will make a difference and I like that. The question is trying to find a balance between what we do under the convention, what we are capable of doing and the political dialogue of what is outside. We’re probably better at doing this.

“We set up IRENA to focus on renewables, there are plenty of other places where we can do this sort of work. The question we should ask ourselves is what should we be doing here and what should we be doing there [outside].'”
